Sniper Elite has carved a niche by attending to the complex minutiae of the fieldcraft and tactics of military sniping without being too inaccessible to casual gamers – plus through the magic of modern graphics and rampant historical revisionism you can shoot Hitler in the testicles and watch the impact in a slow-motion X-ray. The precision, planning, patience, calm and ruthlessness needed to make a person a good sniper fascinated me, and still do. The game seemed cater-made to my sixteen-year-old predilections for the obsessive detail of military sniping, a topic on which I still own several books (and a home-made ghillie suit).
Frankly I never would have guessed at the time of its release that Sniper Elite would develop into a large and reasonably respectable franchise.
